Comedies are stories that are intended primarily to amuse the reader. Contrast to comic relief, which is used to lighten the mood of a dramatic story. Comedies may be either competition or noncompetition stories. Dramatic comedies, where a primarily comedic story has strongly dramatic elements, and black comedies, where the comedy is set against a dark--sometimes very dark--backdrop are subtypes.
