So the other day, I was looking through a few of the Community subjects when I found the page on Writer's Workshops. Though the information in a lot of them still applies to stories out today, I couldn't help but think that it's a shame that they weren't more of an ongoing thing, so I was thinking ... what if a few authors started making them again? I know that they're one of the rewards for Writers United, but that's still only one author creating them.
The big issue is if there is anybody that would be interested in reading and commenting on them. The Writer's Workshops gave advice, but their blogs were also supposed to be used as a soundboard, so people could discuss what was talked about in it or similar topics. Even if you're an experienced writer, I still think reading somebody else's strategies on a certain aspect of writing can be useful and at the very least can give you some ideas or inspiration. The Writer's Workshops were never a step-by-step guide to writing a story, but it was just advice to help out people who might want to improve a certain part of their writing or want some ideas on how to handle a scene or character.
If people are interested in reading them, then we'll need a few writers to volunteer to write some. As good of a writer as one person is, I think the Workshops would benefit from having all different authors participate in writing one, even if it's just a few blurbs of advice. I think the best way for it to work would be to first see who would like to volunteer to write one in a blog. In your head, you might be thinking there are some "better" writers that you would like to hear from, but I think the only requirement for signing up is that you must be currently writing or have written a story on the wiki. If you're not a writer, you can also participate! Maybe you want to do a workshop on commenting (we actually had one in the past) or formatting a page.
If you want to write a workshop, I'd say try to think of a topic that you think is a strength of yours that you can actually provide some information on. Topics that I can think of for some people to use: dialogue, writing a dramatic elimination ceremony, character development, conflict/friendship, showing not telling in writing, creating a character, humor in stories, how to write a __ story (fill in your favorite genre here). I'm sure there's plenty more that you can think of, and I think really anything goes! As long as it's something that you think somebody can benefit from reading or can kickstart a discussion, I think it's totally fine.
This is just an idea that I had that won't really have a purpose if people won't read the workshops, so please speak up if you would like to see some! And if you feel like you want to write one, just say so here or go for it! If you can't think of a topic, say so, and maybe somebody else who has read your story will be able to suggest something that they think you excel at.
